Research Paper Resources

Dana Henderson

My Research Topic is France's opposition to Turkey becoming an EU member and other EU member nations' arguments, either for or against Turkish membership, and how Turkey responds.

- Resource #1: New York Times
Where I searched: New York Times Online
Search Terms: France EU Turkey
Date of Search Nov. 1, 2009
I found this resource to be useful since it has extremely current articles on France's moves to block EU membership for Turkey. I did find that the resource was difficult to search through, however, which made it somewhat cumbersome to use. One article I found discussed not only France's arguments, but EU members' arguments about membership for Turkey as well, which is this link below:

- Resource # 2: BBC News
Where I searched: BBC News Online
Search Terms: France Turkey EU
Date of search Nov. 1, 2009
I thought the BBC news online might be somewhat more useful than the New York Times since this news agency is within the boundaries of the EU. The resource, like the New York Times, was a little difficult to perform a narrow search in, however I did find articles that were on topic and of interest. One I liked in particular describes an anti-France campaign that Turkey is conducting. The article is here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1152114.stm

- Resource #3: Le Monde
Where I searched: lemonde.fr
Search Terms: La Turquie l'UE
Date of search Nov. 1, 2009
I thought Le Monde online would be a great resource for me since it is the leading French newspaper. I found great, on topic articles for my paper, however I found that once I clicked on the links I couldn't read the articles. Le Monde, unlike American newspapers I have used, requires you to pay for an article or buy an online subscription. I am going to try and see if I can access Le Monde through any of the university library offerings, because the articles are right on topic.

- Resource #4: EBSCO Host search online Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development
Where I searched: Online EBSCO Host
Search Terms: France Turkey EU
Date of search Nov. 1, 2009
The journal article I found through the online university library search engine is a great resource. It discusses France's antipathy to Turkey's EU membership. It proposes an argument I had never heard until reading the article, which is that English is becoming a major language and factor in the EU and in Turkey, and if Turkey joins the EU France will potentially lose its grip on the French language being a large part of the EU. The article is entitled France's Antipathy to Turkey's EU Candidacy: The Language Dimension, and it is written by James Darby. http://web.ebscohost.com.proxy2.library.uiuc.edu/ehost/pdf?vid=3&hid=106&sid=55a4c2cd-542f-4e0d-b729-eda1709e1c8a%40sessionmgr110

  1. The University Library does subscribe to Le Monde, via LexisNexis.

    To access it:

    1. Visit http://www.library.illinois.edu/
    2. Click "Online Research Resources (Databases)"
    3. In the search box, enter: Le Monde
    4. Click search
    5. From the list of results, click on the link that says, "Alternate title for Le monde"
    6. Click on the link that say, "01/1987-Present in LexisNexis Academic"

When you run across an a major news publication that is asking you to pay for its content, you can often find it via one of the Library's online resources.
