Log #3/Reneé Gordon

Date of Search: October 25, 2009

Search Topic: The European Union, Culture Policy, and Music

Where I Searched: RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

Search Terms: European Union and Music

As my topic will deal more with music than other fine arts in its consideration of EU cultural programming, it was necessary to search my home database for articles. To my surprise, the search produced 78 results. Some of these were not applicable or in languages I can not read, so my own self-selection reduced the number to 28. Of these articles, some are in scholarly journals, but the majority of the examples are in Festschrifts or in foreign sources with which I am unfamiliar. These sources will need to be examined in more detail to determine how much they actually concern EU culture policy. Below are two of the English items I flagged:

Clark, Caryl. 1997. Forging identity: Beethoven's ode as European Anthem. Critical Inquiry 23, (4) (Summer 1997): 789.

Royle, Stephen A. 2008. From marginality to resurgence: The case of the Irish Islands. Shima: The International Journal of Research into Island Cultures 2, (2) (2008): 42.
