It's a narrow topic so I basically looked through European books under anything that had to do with trade and culture.

Results
I did not find anything close to the topic that I was hoping to find. There are many books relevant to the United States gambling, but not so much the EU.

No citation is necessary because I will not be using this in my final paper.

I found a great Swiss study from 2006 that looks at both the legal and economic aspects of gambling in the EU. The entire study is online, which I found first through the Europa website. This site lead me to the downloadable files. It is a fairly recent study, very comprehensive, so I will most likely include it in my final paper. The source is credible and seems somewhat unbiased. I will continue to look if this organization has updated their study to include recent years' results. It covers socio-economic consequences, scenarios for future gambling growth, a summary of already published European gambling articles, and basically a full picture of the European gambling industry.

I like this resource because the Economist is generally a reliable and unbiased medium to search, but they did not have much to offer for my topic that was current. The article was a follow-up to the Swiss study that I used for Search #2, but it's not as recent as I would have liked. Overall, it's been difficult to find hard facts or statistics about gambling in the EU since 2006. This article talks about gambling popularity in Europe and some other issues Europe faces in relation to gambling, so it works for the final paper.

This is a very recent (October 2009) report to the Trade Barriers Regulation Committee from the European Commission on U.S. gambling laws pertaining to internet gambling. It has to do with internet ganbling regulations and how the U.S. is not too happy about recent occurrences by Americans using the internet to gamble through European countries' internet sites. Because
the technology is so complex, they'll have to come to some kind of negotiation or compromise soon. It is an ongoing problem between the US and EU that has yet to be resolved. I would include it in my final paper because it is so recent, comprehensive and relevant to gambling in the EU. I found it by going from Google Scholar, to Europa, to a link to the report.

This search came up with about 400 documents. Most of the results dealt with the American gambling laws and policies. Many of these laws were connected to internet gambling and how it affects the U.S., and how it is a problem when European countries are involved in gambling that is illegal by U.S. standards by Americans. This is not the direction I want my paper to go in. Most of the documents were not relevant to what I wanted to find in regard to EU gambling laws. These results were too similar to America's problems with the European internet gambling access.

No citation was necessary because I did not find these articles useful to my final paper.

  1. If you are still interested in books on this topic, I was able to locate something in the I-Share system that may be of interest to you:

Title: The regulation of gambling : European and national perspectives
Edited by Alan Littler and Cyrille Fijnaut.

Paste this link into your browser to view the I-Share catalog result:
    https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/uc/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&v1=1&BBRecID=6169368

To get a book from I-Share you need to click "Request" at the top of the I-Share record. Enter you Library ID (on your i-card and starts with 20111-), your home institution (UIUC), and your last name. Click "OK" for "first available copy." On the final page, re-enter your Library ID, and under "pick up" select the library where you want to pick up this book--like the Law Library.

When you request a book from I-Share, it will typically take 7-10 days to arrive, so you should not put it off.
