The Euro: Monetary Integration in the EU

Micah A. North-Shea

Resource One: European Monetary Integration
Source: Longman, 1998
Author(s): Daniel Gros and Niels Thygesen

Search Date: Nov. 1, 2009
Search Resource: Google Scholar
Search Terms: The Euro and the European Union

Evaluation: This treatise on the history of the financial integration part of the union of Europe is well written and hits the important facts. I will likely use this source to gain a preliminary and fundamental understanding of the topic on which I intend to write. Perhaps the 1998 publication date suggests that this source is outdated and I shall look for a newer edition.

Resource Two: Measuring Financial Integration in the Euro Area
Source: European Central Bank, Occasional Paper Series, No. 14, April 2004
Author(s): Lieven Baele, et al.

Search Date: Nov. 1, 2009
Search Resource: Google Scholar
Search Terms: The Euro

Evaluation: This thorough article provides some key issues which might be of great interest to someone not well versed in financial markets. It is an in-depth analysis of how well the nations of the euro area are financially integrated and how that integration has developed over the past decade. Overall, this source is strong (unbiased and well done).

Resource Three: To Euro or Not to Euro
Source: European Journal of International Relations, Vol. 5, No. 2, 147-187 (1999)
Author(s): Thomas Risse, et al.

Search Date: Nov. 1, 2009
Search Resource: Google Scholar
Search Terms: The Euro and the European Union

Evaluation: This article addresses the attitudes toward monetary integration after the initial launch of the Euro. It includes such studies as the British decision not to integrate. This article and articles like it will help facilitate a discussion on the cultural significance of monetary integration. It may also provide predictive variables for future financial integration.

Resource Four: The Economics of the European Union: Policy and Analysis
Source: Oxford University Press, 4 edition (Sept. 2007)
Author(s): Michael J. Artis and Frederick Nixson

Search Date: Nov. 1, 2009
Search Resource: Google Scholar
Search Terms: The Euro and the European Union

Evaluation: This book, clearly intended as a textbook, covers a broad range of topics regarding the economics of the European Union. While it may provide some insights into the Euro itself, this book is likely to be wide and shallow as opposed to narrow and deep.
