I found many articles on several topics of the EU, but only a few specifically on the presidency. I did find two articles by Charlemagne that are to my interest: "The Presidency stake" from the October issue, and "Those Exceptional Swedes. "
Once I read through them, only the first one could be of help for my policy paper. Charlemagne, the author, has interesting views on EU presidency and he says the EU "is preparing to choose two new bosses without any final agreement on the sort of person who should run the club."
He also talks about small countries not having the same stake in power when it comes to the Council as they struggle to be heard.
Overall, the article is useful and interesting for my purposes. I have the same conclusion on the magazine. I will return and use their online search engine with different dates.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your post, Erica. In what time frame are you searching for articles from The Economist?
ReplyDeleteIf you are interested in using the Economist's analysis, you might also consider EIU Country Intelligence, which the Economist produces. EIU Country Intelligences can provide helpful retrospective commentary on a country's domestic and diplomatic issues. You can find it by searching for "EIU Country Intelligence" at http://www.library.illinois.edu/orr.
I was searching for articles for the past 18 months. I basically wanted to get a better understanding of the last 3 terms of EU presidencies. I wanted to see where and on what each president spent most of his energy, what they promised, and what they accomplished. I am hoping to find evidence that they failed because a 6 month term is not enough to implement new policies.
ReplyDeleteFor future reference using this blog, I suggest that people who are registered get automated emails if someone posts a comment or adds suggestions, etc. to the blog. Once there are multiple pages on the blog, no one goes back to their old posts to see if anyone commented on them unless they are notified by email. I am sure sys-admin can turn on a function for this purpose. Just a thought.
I only came back here today because I realized after reading other posts that I left off my citation from my first posting. Here they are:
Charlemagne. "The Presidency Stakes." The Economist 8 Oct. 2009.
Charlemagne. "Sweden’s EU Presidency: Those Exceptional Swedes." The Economist 2 Jul. 2009.
