The Impact of Football on European Integration

1. Source: General Library Search
European integration and football as a source of national and regional identify. KEA European Affairs Newsletter. October 6, 2004. Brussels.

This article, although nicely written, is simply too short and lacks the substance necessary for research purposes. The piece itself is a summary of a panel discussion chaired by MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit who was Co-Chairman of the EP Green Party at the time of publication.

2. Source: Personal collection
Foer, Franklin. How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization. Harper Perennial. 2004

First things first, please read this book if you have yet to do so, it will not disappoint. While the first article spoke of football's positive contribution to European integration Mr. Foer's book references example after example of football's ability to create inclusive identities which in turn manifest themselves in violence and hatred. Consequently, the chapters about European Football are helpful as I learn to appreciate the complex issue of European identify both inside and outside the 27 member states.

  1. Patrick, the debate in the KEA European Affairs Newsletter (available from: http://www.keanet.eu/news.html) that you located is an interesting example of a primary source. I looked up the newsletter and noted that it lacks citations, but it's really just an editorial-type piece. It may be low on research substance, but the positions articulated may be and interesting framework for research. Good starting point!

Did you find the KEA European Affairs Newsletter through a internet search, or were you already familiar with this consulting firm?

  2. Yes, I agree, the lack of citations makes it low on research substance but it has already proved useful to get the ideas flowing. I was unfamiliar with the KEA group and found the article through a general internet search. I will try to find the exact "search."
