Lucinda Morgan-Research Log #2

Date of search: November 2, 2009
Topic/Purpose of search: Turkey’s education system in regards to its EU candidacy prospects
Where I looked for information? Eurostat
The search terms I used to conduct the search: “Turkey education”
Results of my search: Using Eurostat was very convenient for finding accurate data regarding education. Even though Turkey is not a member state of the EU, Eurostat includes its statistical data. Information was concise and very relevant for the data I want to include in my paper.

Topic/Purpose of search: Turkey’s education system in regards to its EU candidacy prospects
Where I looked for information? Europa
The search terms I used to conduct the search: “Turkey EU enlargement”
Results of my search: Though not as efficient and direct to use as Eurostat, Europa contained a good amount of information and primary source documents related to Turkey’s attempts to join the EU, which were useful as background and foundational materials for my paper.

Date of search: November 10, 2009
Topic/Purpose of search: Information from Turkey’s Ministry of National Education
Where I looked for information? Google
The search terms I used to conduct the search: “Turkey” and “Ministry of Education”
Results of my search: I had anticipated that the official website for Turkey’s Ministry of Education would contain useful information in English, but I was very surprised that the website only contains four document links and one official news article in English. Of course, it appears that the Turkish homepage is quite useful for those who can read Turkish, but the availabilities English are quite sparse.
